"Haiku No Niwa" by the Japanese
American Community
Bainbridge Island, Washington State

"Haiku No Niwa, the elegant and beautiful
Japanese Haiku Garden on the west side of
the Bainbridge Public Library, was created by
the Bainbridge Island Japanese-American
Community as a tribute to their ancestors,
many of whom, though citizens, were removed
from the island and interned in camps during
World War II."

For some reason this little garden fascinates
me. Read more about it
HERE. The garden
combines aspects of Japanese and Pacific
Northwest cultures. Plants, stone, wood, and
lots of rain - plus poetry. Sounds nice.

Bainbridge Island is a little Island in the state of Washington. You
can only get there by ferry boat from Seattle. That's where the
Haiku Garden is, at the Public Library. I have been to the island
next door, Whidbey Island, only once. Click on the map at left to
find it. It is so beautiful up there at the tippy top of the United
States. You might even spot a whale from the ferry, or so I've heard.

writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place.[1] Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and it has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to
Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire.[2] In modern times, paint (particularly spray paint) and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner's
consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime. Graffiti may also express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Within hip hop culture, graffiti has
evolved alongside hip hop music, b-boying, and other elements.[3] Unrelated to hip-hop graffiti, gangs use their own form of graffiti to mark territory or to serve as an indicator of gang-related activities. Controversies that surround graffiti continue to create
disagreement amongst city officials, law enforcement, and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested and reviled
by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction, modern style graffiti, stencil graffiti emerges, Early New York subway graffiti, graffiti pictures, graffiti shop, graffiti store, bombing, tag, tags, flixs, graffiti video, grafiti,

It's fun to learn about different parts of the country and
different
regional cultures. The United States is a vast country
with so many new and interesting places to explore.
WHAT IS HAIKU?
One of the most important forms of traditional Japanese
poetry. A haiku is a 17-syllable verse consisting of three
metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables (but not always
when translated into English).
Here's another great Haiku. Count the syllables
in English this time.
